EPISODE 1 – THE HUNT BEGINS
The alarm sounds long before dawn. While most of the world is still asleep, my day has already begun. There is something special about leaving before sunrise. The roads are quiet, the air is cool, and as the first light breaks over the horizon, I am reminded why I love this job. Watching the sunrise from behind the steering wheel is a privilege few people experience. It fills me with excitement and anticipation, knowing that every new day brings another opportunity to solve problems, meet people, and make a difference.
Today's destination is one of the largest chrome mines in the province. My objective is simple: identify poorly performing slurry pumps and uncover opportunities where our mechanical sealing technology can improve reliability, reduce water consumption, and lower maintenance costs.
Like every road trip, the first stop is almost a ritual. A local highway service station provides the day's first coffee. If I'm lucky, there's a fresh breakfast waiting. If not, a Snickers bar becomes breakfast. It's not my preferred way to start the day—I usually avoid the sugar rush—but experience has taught me that once I leave the highway, food and even drinking water become scarce. Any calories are better than none.
The journey ahead is three and a half hours. With nothing but open road stretching before me, my thoughts naturally turn to the day's mission. I mentally rehearse my Unique Selling Proposition, refining every sentence until it feels natural. Every visit starts with a conversation, but the goal is always the same: identify a problem, earn the customer's trust, and offer a solution that delivers real value.
The road demands my full attention. In this part of the country, stray cattle, goats, and wildlife can appear without warning. One moment of distraction can end the journey before it even begins.
Eventually, the towering structures of the mine appear on the horizon.
Like every mine visit, the process starts at the security gate. Sign in. Complete the visitor induction. Review the safety procedures. Collect the visitor permit. Then comes the waiting. Anyone who works in mining knows that patience is part of the job. Visitors wait until their escort is available.
Before long, I am greeted by Oliver, the acting foreman.
As we walk together, I introduce myself, explain who we are, and describe the products and services our company has supplied to the mining industry for more than two decades. The moment I mention water savings I notice his expression change. His curiosity is immediate.
Without hesitation, Oliver leads me to the engineering office.
"Good morning, Mr. Ghomo," I say confidently.
"After speaking with Oliver, I understand that reducing water consumption could be of interest to you. Our company has specialised in mechanical seals for slurry pump applications for over twenty years. Our advanced sealing systems improve equipment reliability, reduce maintenance requirements, minimise operational risk, and eliminate unnecessary gland water consumption."
Mr. Ghomo pauses for a moment before looking at Oliver.
"Take him to the tailings plant," he says. "Show him our problem with the sliming."
"Yes, Mr. Ghomo."
Before entering the plant, Oliver reminds me to put on the required personal protective equipment.
The inspection begins.
Years of experience immediately take over. My eyes scan every pump, every pipeline, every leaking gland. My mind instinctively starts identifying failure patterns and calculating where improvements can be made.
The plant is clearly working hard. Maintenance appears relentless, and it is obvious that skilled maintenance personnel are stretched thin.
LOOKING FOR THE REAL PROBLEM
When we reach the tailings line, the problem becomes impossible to ignore.
Three slurry pumps operate in series.
Every single one of them is leaking heavily.
The leakage is so severe that sections of old conveyor belt have been cut and fastened around the pumps in an attempt to contain the slurry spraying into the surrounding area. It is an improvised solution to a serious problem—one that presents both a significant safety hazard and an environmental risk.
The final pump in the series operates at approximately 12 bar while pumping slurry with a specific gravity of 1.3.
Each pump still uses traditional gland packing with a stuffing box and gland service water.
"How often do you service the glands?" I ask.
"Every day," Oliver replies. "We adjust or pull the glands daily, and we replace the sleeves and packing every two weeks."
"And the bearing assemblies?"
"About every two months."
The answer confirms exactly what I suspected.
Oliver then takes me to another area of the plant where two pumps supply the gland service water to the process. Ironically, these pumps also operate with conventional gland packing and are suffering from the same problems of leakage, maintenance, and poor reliability.
By now, the complete picture is clear.
The leaking tailings pumps are only the visible symptom. The root cause extends much deeper, affecting maintenance costs, water consumption, equipment reliability, production uptime, environmental compliance, and worker safety.
The real problem is rarely just the visible symptom.
Every application tells a story. The first step is learning how to listen to it.
As the site visit comes to an end, I turn to Oliver.
"I'd like to come back next week, same time. I'd like the opportunity to present a complete solution—not just for the leaking pumps, but for every symptom we've seen today."
He nods in agreement.
Driving away from the mine, I replay the day's events in my mind. The early start, the long drive, the waiting at the gate, the conversations, the inspection, and finally the opportunity to solve a real problem.
Some people see a long day behind the wheel.
I see possibility.
Today's journey wasn't about selling a mechanical seal.
It was about earning trust.
Because in this business, every successful solution begins long before the first product is ever installed.
